Solo vs. squad: how your social energy should pick your genre

Your energy for other people on any given night is the most underrated factor in whether you'll have fun gaming. Here's how to work with it.

The classic mistake: firing up a team-based shooter when you're already drained by people. Here's a smarter framework for matching your social energy to your game choice.

Low social energy nights

Single-player RPGs, city builders, and cozy sims are designed for exactly this mode. No coordination overhead, no voice chat, no one depending on you. These genres also tend to have natural save points that respect short sessions.

Medium social energy

Co-op with a close friend hits differently than a full random lobby. Two-player co-op games (Hazelight Studio titles, Stardew Valley, It Takes Two) give you connection without the full social load of a 5v5 match.

High social energy

This is when competitive team games shine. Ranked queues, voice comms, real-time coordination — when you're in the right headspace, these sessions produce the highest highs. Save competitive play for when you're actually ready for it.
